QuartzTech and Time Travel
Rampage wasn’t the only “New-Tech” company as they were known. There were dozens that sprang up about a year or so after Rampage top the charts in earnings. QuartzTech was a small Server company that had expanded into robotic manufacturing. You’ve seen those arms that put cars together? Well, QuartzTech decided to build a full “Assembler Droid”. Using there top techs they used all solid state parts because at this time Rampage hadn’t released it’s license for “Brain Box” technology. The “ENT 23 Assembler Droid” was a server with a droid body. Designed to be free-functioning, like the legendary Golems of mythology, the ENT 23 could be giving voice commands from controllers who were imprinted in it’s system. The ENT 23 was able to build just about anything, from large buildings to complex machines. For a time QuartzTech had cornered the construction market along with large demolition. One night a new Tech by the name Daron Sigil decided to input all his research data about time travel into one of the ENT 23’s he was suppose to repair and clean during his night shift job. Over a period of about two months Sigil put about 230 mega bytes of data on the ENT’s hard drive. This of course was directly against company policy. His intention was that once he had enough data and a finished design, he would have the droid build him a proto-type of his time machine. Of course he didn’t expect it to really work, it was just a way for him to keep busy at his boring night job.
Then a week later there was a violent lightening storm on Sigil’s night off. During this storm the ENT that Sigil had been storing his data in was working on the company’s Blue Dragon. Which was in a separate building because it was a large industrial sized version. The droid was about half way thru the repairs when an small streak of lightening tagged the power cables running from the Blue Dragon building and the main QuartzTech building. This power surge overloaded the ENT and threw it across the room. The Blue Dragon was grounded and only suffered a few minor burns and a lost left coil. After the ENT came back on line it rebooted and did a system check. It was found later that some how the Blue Dragon plans and Sigil’s unfinished Time Machine design had been combined by the droid?s system check which was meant to reintegrate damaged files. The droid repaired it’s self and then went back to repairing the Blue Dragon. When the morning shift came in to check on the ENT. They found it in it’s compartment recharging like normal. However, the Blue Dragon was totally redesigned with a strange compartment for a person to stand in. The control panel was even moved and changed. After the techs used a near-by terminal to access the droid’s hard drive they found all the data Sigil had put on the drive. They made a copy of the hard drive with the plans that the system check had created. Then they took the droid off-line. The Boss called Sigil into his office to question him on the data found in the droid.
After confessing his plan to his Boss he was surprised that the Boss also shared an interest in Time Travel. They went over the plan that the droid had ally created. After a few days of review they realized that the droid’s software was designed so that the droid couldn’t build anything that was not logical or unsound. The Boss wantedto test the device, later named the “Sigil” after it’s human inventor. So, of course Sigil wanted to go first. His design was simple, a single person would put on a Temporal locator wrist band so they would not be stuck in the past. Future time travel was impossible because it hasn’t happened yet. The Traveler would then stand in the enclosed chamber where his atomic structure would be harmonized with a special array of magnetic coils which could be “tuned” to any past-time. The traveler could only stay in the past for 24 hours at the most. after that the strain on his atomic structure would cause the person to dissolve into a pile of goop. Sigil went back to the date Dec 19, 2002. To see what it was like. After walking around for about two hours he went behind a building and pressed the return button onhis wrist band. With a small flash of light he was back in his own time. As proof he brought back a discarded news paper which was made of paper. News papers in 6025 are made of a silicate-poly plastic that never breaks down. These papers are e-papers which allow the owner to download about 5 GB worth of text into them. They also have automatic updates as the next installment of the paper is made available. To Sigil finding that paper and seeing the world of the past with his own eyes was a boy hood dream come true. he had envisioned changing the past to fix the future. But, as time went on the two of them found that you can’t change the past as easily as you might think. They decide to sell trips to the past like a tour. The plan worked and made QuartzTech very rich. The UWG did test of their own to see if they could make changes to the past.
Without anyone it was almost impossible to change the past. Until a man named John Cromwell decide to try an experiment of his own. A noted historian and author of many time travel fiction novels, he decide to take a tour of the year 2003 and see if he could find his Grate Grand father (Too many grates to write out here) So, before going into the past he logged on to the Web and tracked down his family tree. Finding the name of his Grate Grand father he signed up for the next tour. Most tours lasted about four hours. Of course since they still used paper money in the year 2003 the tourists were sold paper money from collectors that were used before or in that time. Paying close attention not to sell a note dated after the Tour destination date. Cromwell had put together a text file on a very old computer. Then saved it on a an old floppy disc. Hiding this on himself, he went on the tour. Once in that time he simply bought some stamps and mailed a letter when the Tour guide wasn’t watching. The letter was sent to his Great Grand Father Robert Cromwell. It was of all things a history of his life and things that were to happen to prove he was telling the truth.
Above all he was told never to tell anyone of his letter. He had read that Robert was a computer programmer but he never made any real money because as soon has he came up with a new software title all the big companies would put something similar on the shelves. So, John had included an advanced programming language and blue prints on how to build an advance computer system. Robert was skeptical at first but as things in the media began to happen as described in the letter. He was more and more convinced that this might actually be a letter from the future. He built the new Computer and learned how to use the new advanced language. Soon, he had all of it patented in his name and started his own company. The real shock came to John Cromwell as he went back to his own time. A strange transformation came over him and when he stepped out of the time chamber he had two sets of memories. One from the previous time-line and one from the new one. Proving to him that time could be changed, because now he and his family line were know all over the world for their advanced computer hardware and software products. I know this because John Cromwell was my Great Grand Father and one of the founders of Rampage Inc.
